Middleton Arena swimming pool refurbishment. A Modern Leisure Centre Swimming Pool Upgrade
Middleton Arena is a shared leisure center, community hub and multi-purpose events and entertainment venue. As part of its ongoing commitment to health, wellbeing and community engagement, the venue undertook a comprehensive swimming pool refurbishment to enhance the user experience for all ages and abilities.
Swimming pools in leisure centers play a vital role in supporting physical health, mental wellbeing and social interaction. Whether visitors are swimming for fitness, attending aqua classes, learning to swim or simply enjoying the water for fun, Middleton Arena swimming pool offers a wide range of sessions suitable for every age and ability.
SA Pool Systems Limited were initially contacted to assess whether the main swimming pool and learner pool could be refurbished rather than replaced. Both pools were showing significant signs of wear, including:
The pools were no longer meeting the expected standards for a modern leisure center swimming pool.
Our Contracts Manager attended a detailed site visit alongside Rochdale Borough Council’s consultant, the leisure center management team and the Head of Leisure and Wellbeing. Together, we reviewed the condition of the pools and discussed the most effective and long-lasting refurbishment solution.
Following the site inspection, SA Pool Systems Limited were invited to provide a full quotation for a swimming pool refurbishment using our Epoxy Resin Lining System. We were delighted to be awarded the contract shortly afterwards.
Works commenced in August 2025, with the full leisure center swimming pool refurbishment completed within 12 weeks.
Due to the original pool construction and previous finishes, several unknown challenges emerged throughout the project. Through clear communication, collaborative problem-solving and a strong working relationship with the client team, every issue was successfully overcome to deliver a high-quality, durable finish.

The result is a fully refurbished leisure center swimming pool with a modern, seamless and watertight finish designed for long-term performance.
The Head of Leisure and Wellbeing, along with the entire leisure centre team, were extremely pleased with the outcome. Staff commented that the pools now look like brand new facilities, providing a refreshed, safe and welcoming environment for the local community.
This project demonstrates how a professionally delivered swimming pool refurbishment can extend the life of existing pools, improve aesthetics and reduce long-term maintenance costs for leisure centers and local authorities.
