A guide to swimming pool maintenance

If you have recently installed a swimming pool or acquired a property with one, swimming pool maintenance can be a daunting prospect. Luckily, ensuring a healthy swimming pool is relatively easy with a consistent and effective pool maintenance regime. Establish your routine and you can feel confident that your pool will be safe and attractive for years to come.

The three C’s of swimming pool maintenance

If you are new to owning a swimming pool, there are three simple but important aspects to swimming pool maintenance: Circulation, Cleaning, and Chemistry. By following the Three C’s, your pool care routine will be straightforward and effective.

  1. Circulation

Proper swimming pool circulation is extremely important – it is what separates a pool from a pond! Moving water is much cleaner and safer than stagnant water, and pools with good circulation are less prone to experiencing cloudy water or pool algae. To maintain healthy circulation, we recommend running the pool pump for at least 10 to 12 hours a day, which will turn the water over a few times. It is also important to backwash the filter frequently.

  1. Cleaning

Regular swimming pool cleaning will reduce the likelihood of significant issues occurring in the future, and also highlight potential problems before they become serious. Your cleaning regime should involve skimming, brushing and vacuuming your swimming pool weekly. The vacuum is your most important tool, as it will clean the floor and walls of the swimming pool without emptying it. Nobody wants to swim in a grimy pool!

  1. Chemicals

The final critical aspect of swimming pool maintenance is keeping the chemicals balanced. Swimming pools are kept bacteria-free by use of a sanitiser (usually chlorine), which must be monitored with a water balancing test.  The more regularly the swimming pool is used, the more frequently the test will need to be performed.

That concludes the three most important aspects of swimming pool maintenance. Whether you choose to maintain your pool yourself with occasional professional check-ups, or you’d rather keep the whole process in the hands of the professionals, SA Pool Systems can help.
